Data Governance Is Not AI Governance
Your enterprise may have excellent data governance. But who governs what your AI does with that data?
Data governance establishes control over information. AI governance establishes accountability for what intelligent systems do with it.

This is a distinction I believe every CEO, CIO, CTO, CAIO, and CISO needs to examine.
Data governance establishes policies for quality, privacy, access, and lineage.
AI governance must go further. It addresses model behaviour, decision accountability, safety, human oversight, and changing system performance.
Consider an AI-powered credit assessment system.
The customer data may be accurate, complete, and properly authorized.
Yet the AI could still generate inconsistent recommendations, exhibit unfair behaviour, or produce decisions that cannot be adequately explained.
Well-governed data does not automatically produce well-governed AI.
I see six complementary responsibilities:
Scope: Govern data inputs AND AI behaviour.
Change: Maintain data policies AND monitor model drift.
Quality: Validate records AND decision outcomes.
Authority: Control data access AND AI decision permissions.
Evidence: Maintain data lineage AND AI decision traceability.
Response: Address data breaches AND AI-related incidents.
At Dr.Pinnacle, this distinction shapes our vision for OpenVals.
We are developing an engineering-led approach to AI evaluation, validation, benchmarking, and assurance that can help enterprises examine reliability, consistency, safety, and measurable performance.
Our ambition is to connect technical evaluation evidence with the governance decisions enterprises must make.
OpenVals is not a substitute for data governance, legal accountability, or organizational oversight.
It is intended to help strengthen the evidence behind AI assurance.
Because policies tell us what AI should do.
Validation helps us determine whether AI actually behaves as expected.
My question to enterprise leaders:
Can your organization demonstrate that its AI decisions remain reliable after deployment—not just that its underlying data is governed?
